Tensions escalated, culminating in a violent incident in the parliament. In response to the growing unrest, Serbia\u2019s Speaker of the National Assembly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nedeljnik.rs\/djilas-ana-brnabic-izvrsila-danas-drzavni-udar\/\">unilaterally passed over 70 different legislative amendments<\/a> about the state budget, education, the legislative system and lithium mining \u2014 without parliamentary debate. Critics claimed that this move undermined democratic principles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>Due to the lack of reaction from the authorities and due to attempts to cover it up, the university and high school <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/serbia-student-protests-novi-sad-video\/33242020.html\">students organized protests and emerged as leaders <\/a>in demanding transparency and systemic reform, reflecting a generational desire for change. They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/video\/2024\/12\/13\/serbian-students-rally-against-government-refute-claims-of-western-funding\">blocked more than <\/a><u>70 <\/u>universities and high schools, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2024\/12\/13\/serbian-students-rally-against-government-refute-claims-of-western-funding\">rejected government accusations of foreign influence<\/a>, and demanded:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span><\/span> <strong><span>Full Transparency:<\/span><\/strong><span> Release of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grf.bg.ac.rs\/vesti\/sjv?id=2186\">renovation and collapse-related documents<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span><\/span><span> <\/span><strong><span>Accountability:<\/span><\/strong><span> Identification and prosecution of those responsible.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span><\/span> <strong><span>Systemic Reforms:<\/span><\/strong><span> Measures to prevent future infrastructural failures and ensure public safety.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span>Government Response: Silence and Delays<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>Government institutions remained largely silent, with only a few officials attempting to calm the crisis. President Vu\u010di\u0107 eventually became the main government voice, presenting certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/serbias-vucic-promises-meet-protesters-demands-after-train-station-disaster-2024-12-11\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">documentation from the investigation<\/a>. He proceeded with offering a 20% increase in funding for education as well as the different programs for youth, such as affordable housing, which protesters interpreted as <a href=\"https:\/\/n1info.rs\/vesti\/studenti-mu-rekli-nesvi-jeftini-stanovi-i-sve-vuciceve-nepristojne-ponude\/\">trying to bribe them.<\/a> Finally, the government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20241220-serbia-shuts-schools-amid-new-protests-over-station-collapse\">introduced school winter break earlier<\/a> than planned, hoping to calm the crisis. But <a href=\"https:\/\/n1info.rs\/vesti\/ucenici-14-gimnazije-u-beogradu-odlucili-da-idu-u-skolu-iako-je-proglasen-raspust\/\">students refused <\/a>this and continued going to school without having classes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>However, the protesters argued their demands remained unmet. They refused to talk to the president, reflecting broader concerns about centralized power, weak institutions and mistrust in the government. While the regime asserts that public trust remains unchanged, opposition groups and citizen movements point to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfd.org\/what-we-do\/resources\/four-out-five-serbian-citizens-worried-about-quality-work-state-institutions?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">surveys<\/a> indicating low confidence in institutions, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/n1info.rs\/english\/news\/a502854-presentation-of-false-promises-in-front-of-serbian-presidency\/\">unfulfilled promises<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-election-vucic-monitors-4da0088a277d1fecbd8457c4cc1a24f7\">allegations of electoral irregularities<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/cep.org.rs\/en\/blog\/what-is-a-limbo-state-case-of-serbia\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Stagnation in Serbia\u2019s EU accession<\/a> has further fueled debate and dissatisfaction, with some media claiming that the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/serbia-silent-protest-roof-collapse-vucic-1b15a948ccf284407ec7c91f53def487\">public is unconvinced <\/a>of the government\u2019s willingness to take responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span>International Reactions <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>International companies involved in the renovation of the station<a href=\"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/do-not-care-about-human-lives-chinese-company-refused-to-check-the-stability-of-the-station-in-novi-sad\/\"> remained silent<\/a> while organizations like <a href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/country\/serbia\/nations-transit\/2024?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Freedom House<\/a>have raised concerns about Serbia&#8217;s democratic processes, and Amnesty International published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.nl\/content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/A-Digital-Prison-Surveillance-and-the-suppression-of-civil-society-in-Serbia.pdf?x45541\">r<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.nl\/content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/A-Digital-Prison-Surveillance-and-the-suppression-of-civil-society-in-Serbia.pdf?x45541\">eport on the state surveillance of the protesters<\/a>. Protesters have shared videos alleging incidents instructed by the officials, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/srpskainfo.com\/video-automobilima-htjeli-kroz-ljude-incidenti-tokom-blokada-saobracaja-u-beogradu\/\">students being run over by cars<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/n1info.rs\/vesti\/nekoliko-momaka-u-crnim-kapuljacama-na-ucenike-karlovacke-gimnazije-bacilo-petarde\/\">firecrackers thrown at minors <\/a>in high schools. The government has denied these allegations, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reneweuropegroup.eu\/news\/2024-11-22\/novi-sad-tragedy-unjustified-use-of-force-against-politicians-and-citizens-unacceptable\">violence, secret arrests, and intimidation<\/a> of the protesters and this crisis has drawn comparisons in the media to the protests of the 1990s against Milosevic\u2019s regime, a time when the country teetered on the brink of civil war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>Meanwhile, the EU has shown a different approach. European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Tjj3a8mPfko\">President Ursula von der Leyen<\/a> and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed support for Vu\u010di\u0107 during recent visits. Critics argue this reflects double standards compared to the EU\u2019s response to protests in other countries, citing Serbia\u2019s geopolitical importance and relation with Russia, its EU accession status and importance for regional stability, as well as lithium reserves crucial to Europe\u2019s green energy goals. For example, despite<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R2DYqJRk5eo\"> huge ecological protests<\/a> halting mining projects last year, Germany remains invested in Serbia&#8217;s raw material potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span>Serbia at the Crossroad<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>The Youth movement reflects a generational divide. Older Serbians\u2014disillusioned by past struggles, including the Milosevi\u0107 era\u2014 are fearful, follow traditional media and are expressing skepticism. Younger Serbians who have grown up under Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s administration, rely on social media and creative activism. They did not choose a leader due to safety reasons, and are using digital tools to promote and organize democratic practices like plenary voting, demonstrating innovative approaches. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>Their unity has sparked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.021.rs\/story\/Novi-Sad\/Vesti\/395688\/VIDEO-Poljoprivrednici-doneli-pakete-hrane-i-drugih-potrepstina-studentima-u-blokadi-u-Novom-Sadu.html\">solidarity<\/a> among Serbians worldwide who held protests in Portugal, Germany, Austria, USA. <a href=\"https:\/\/n1info.rs\/vesti\/studenti-filozofskog-fakulteta-u-zagrebu-i-rijeci-podrzali-studente-u-srbiji\/\">Croatian and Bosnian students <\/a>have expressed their support as well. Inspired by this movement, other societal groups like <a href=\"https:\/\/vreme.com\/vesti\/advokati-u-jednodnevnom-strajku-zbog-hapsenja-slobodnih-ljudi-umesto-odgvornih-za-nadstresnicu\/\">lawyers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/serbiantimes.info\/en\/actors-stand-with-students-association-of-drama-artists-supports-their-demands-milos-bikovic-and-nebojsa-dugalic-among-the-names\/\">artists<\/a>, farmers, educators and doctors have initiated strikes and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=j6YwZd-TD4E\">demonstrations in Serbia,<\/a> amplifying demands for systemic reform and accountability. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>The government has recognized the importance and size of the protests but has yet to initiate meaningful dialogue or propose solutions.
