Additionally, buildings and infrastructure block natural air flows, trapping heat and creating a \u00ab\u00a0heat island\u00a0\u00bb. Other urban systems, such as transportation, industry, and air conditioning, further contribute to the overall temperature increase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a city like Dhaka, the world\u2019s fourth-largest city, temperatures can be up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/351796389_Changes_in_Urbanization_and_Urban_Heat_Island_Effect_in_Dhaka_City\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7\u00baC higher during the day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and 5\u202f\u00b0C higher at night compared to nearby non-urban areas, due to the UHI effect. The effects in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meteoswiss.admin.ch\/climate\/the-climate-of-switzerland\/urban-heat.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Z\u00fcrich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are similar. In Dhaka, where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldweatheronline.com\/dhaka-weather-averages\/bd.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">average temperatures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the hottest season are around 34\u202f\u00b0C and extremely high humidity, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perceived<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> temperatures are even higher. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatecentre.org\/13733\/red-crescent-activates-early-action-protocol-for-heatwaves-in-dhaka\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During heatwaves like the one in 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with temperatures surpassing 40\u202f\u00b0C, conditions become nearly unbearable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Negative consequences of the Urban Heat Island effect<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The consequences of UHI have wide-ranging implications. Heat waves in cities can be significantly more intense and prolonged than in their surrounding areas, posing an elevated risk of exhaustion, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/heat-stress-what-it-and-how-it-measured\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heat stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mental stress and various <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/climate-change-heat-and-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heat-related illnesses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Among the most vulnerable are older people, children, individuals with preexisting medical conditions, homeless people, individuals with little financial resources and outdoor workers. The scorching heat restricts them from working outside during the daytime, depriving them of crucial income. They rarely have the possibility of taking out insurance and oftentimes live in badly isolated or poorly constructed houses in the most exposed areas. Further, they often lack access to information and are missed when spreading heat alerts. In addition to the adverse effects on human health and economic conditions, UHI also have detrimental impacts on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/374230932_Impact_of_Vegetated_Infrastructure_to_Mitigate_the_Urban_Heat_Island_Effect_in_Dhaka_Bangladesh\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ecosystems and wildlife<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as loss and damage to the ecosystem, as many species struggle to adapt to the rapid changes in temperature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Ways forward: Solutions to adapt to and mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cities can proactively address the UHI effect through various adaptation and mitigation strategies. One of the most effective is increasing green cover through tree planting and creating green spaces, which provide shade and cool the air through transpiration. In this process, water evaporates from leaves and dissipates heat from the environment. However, Dhaka\u2019s green cover is estimated at only 8%, far below the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/urp.buet.ac.bd\/UploadedPDFs\/Pdf638275217921348080.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended 20%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.familyhandyman.com\/article\/what-is-a-green-roof\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green roofs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and walls can provide an extra layer of insulation, thereby cooling buildings and absorbing excess heat. In addition, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmsilicone.com\/energy-savings-reflective-roof\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reflective roofs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can lower surface temperatures by reflecting solar radiation, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aquapave.co.nz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pervious pavements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> filter water, leading it effectively back to the water cycle. Reducing vehicle emissions and promoting public transportation is also essential for limiting heat buildup.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incorporating UHI reduction measures into building codes, urban planning regulations, and heat response plans is essential for long-term climate resilience. Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) recently took a significant step by appointing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onebillionresilient.org\/project\/chief-heat-officers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chief Heat Officer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, raising awareness of heat as a disaster. Although not directly tied to the UHI effect, this initiative reflects an increasing awareness of heat-related challenges. DNCC\u2019s pledge to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhakatribune.com\/bangladesh\/284915\/dncc-s-chief-heat-officer-initiates-tree?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plant 200,000 trees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a commendable step toward heat mitigation, but a holistic approach is essential. A comprehensive heat action plan and measurable development indicators \u2014 such as trees per capita \u2014 can ensure effective and sustainable solutions to mitigate the urban heat island effect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensor technology and standardized and comparable data collection and analysis can help identify urban heat hotspots and guide targeted mitigation efforts. Well-functioning early warning systems, including effective communication channels that reach the most vulnerable populations, are equally essential.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UHI effect poses a growing challenge for cities worldwide, impacting human health and the environment.
