In recent years, intellectual, artistic and activist circles in some Central Asian countries have eagerly engaged in discussions about the colonial legacies of Tsarist Russia and the Soviet regime in the region. Reflection and decolonial approaches to (re)thinking the colonial past have become prominent topics in academia, the media, and the general public. Nevertheless, scholarly engagement with postcolonial theories and decolonial analysis in Central Asia is only gaining momentum. At the same time, local decolonial initiatives are actively searching for language, methods, and concepts to reflect and rethink their post-Soviet/postcolonial societal and human condition through the lens of decoloniality. In this talk, we shall explore this quest through the example of decolonial discourses in Kyrgyzstan.
