Johanna Jean-Petit-Matile

Johanna Jean-Petit-Matile studied law at the University of Fribourg i.Ü., at the Center for Transnational Studies in London and in Copenhagen. After her Bachelor’s degree, she completed an internship at the Delegation of the European Union to Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein in Bern. After her Master’s degree, Johanna worked as a trainee lawyer at a court and in a law firm. She is currently writing her doctoral thesis as part of the SNSF research project “Covid-19 in Society” on the topic of human rights in crisis governance. For the past two years, Johanna has been a board member of the Basel regional group of foraus. In addition to her interest in Swiss-EU relations, Johanna is interested in human rights and federalism issues in an international context. She was a member of the foraus-Board until May 2026.

Switzerland’s foreign policy is being reshaped by geopolitical fragmentation, fiscal pressure, militarisation, technological disruption, and climate crisis. At the same time, progress on gender equality is facing growing pushback. This publication argues that gender backlash is not a marginal issue, but a structural trend. It also argues that gender equality is not a symbolic add-on, but a condition for a credible and effective foreign policy.
