foraus and Proberaum Zukunft are collaborating to stage future challenges in Swiss foreign policy in a unique setting. Following a successful run of the first scenario, “The Flood of the Millennium,” in Bern (spring 2025), the next edition will take place in the fall of 2026 at Basel City Hall.

A Three-Phase Project

“Politique en scène: Deciding the Future” is structured as a three-phase project:

Phase 1: With the help of experts, the scenario is developed and refined, and all relevant facts are compiled through a comprehensive process. The goal is to create an evidence-based future scenario that addresses current foreign policy issues.

Phase 2: The scenario is presented over several evenings as a staged debate, in which an audience meets with high-profile experts from politics, business, academia, civil society, and government and must make a decision within a very short time.

Phase 3: The topics discussed during the evening sessions are further developed by foraus and ultimately translated into policy proposals and recommendations for action.

Why is this project important?
Political issues must be presented in a way that is both scientifically sound and understandable—and, above all, emotionally compelling. Foreign policy, in particular, often seems distant, complex, and disconnected from everyday life. The flood of information often leads to a so-called “sense of powerlessness,” in which one’s own political involvement seems futile. And although many young people are actively involved in initiatives such as “Fridays for Future” in the area of climate policy, for example, their political participation remains very low (srf 2023). Political processes must be brought to life through new, innovative formats. This requires methods drawn from art and culture.
