GenSouth: New voices from the Global South for the multilateral system of the future
The current multilateral system faces major challenges, including a loss of trust in international institutions, ineffective management of global crises, and diverging priorities among established powers. Addressing these issues requires the inclusion of new voices and perspectives. It is with this in mind that GenSouth—an initiative supported by foraus and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, among others—was launched in 2024 to bring together young researchers from the Global South and develop recommendations for a more inclusive and effective multilateralism.
This project brief outlines four key areas offering concrete pathways to rethink multilateralism and ensure a more equitable and sustainable future by 2040:
- Strengthening International Humanitarian Law (IHL): Promoting enhanced cooperation among states, the private sector, and international institutions to better prevent and sanction violations of IHL.
- New South-South cooperation: Establishing a platform for sustainable infrastructure that ensures strengthened economic integration and climate resilience.
- Global financial reform: Ensuring direct and equitable access to climate finance for local communities in the Global South.
- Transforming the UN Security Council: Developing a more inclusive and representative model that limits the veto power and integrates the Global South more fully into global governance.

GenSouth: New voices from the Global South for the future(s) of multilateralism
The GenSouth programme which brings together young professionals and researchers from Global South Think tanks to engage directly with multilateral actors in Geneva, at the heart of international governance.
This Project Brief is the outcome of the second edition of GenSouth, held in February 2026, and outlines four major axes, each accompanied by concrete policy proposals identifying actionable pathways for reform towards 2050:
- Public systems enabling equitable participation in global governance: with a focus on financial access and mobility, public systems should be co-designed, governed, and transformed with women and youth from the Global South as decision-makers, knowledge holders, and architects of global futures.
- Climate justice led by feminist-decolonial popular assemblies: a Global Popular Assemblies platform should be integrated within UN processes, built through a Global South reform coalition, a multilateral pact on climate justice and UN Charter revision.
- Peace and security governance as a multiplex security framework: strengthening regional blocs should be strengthened, thereby maturing minilateral platforms into governance clusters, and formalising UN-regional compacts.
- A regenerative and multidimensional Global Financial Architecture: development should be redefined beyond debt-fueled GDP growth, thus democratising international financial institutions, creating fairer credit rating systems, and strengthening regional development banks.

Global Labs: Food Systems Transformation
As the 21st century unfolds, the world’s food systems stand at a critical juncture. What we eat, how it’s grown, and how it reaches our plates have implications beyond personal health— they shape livelihoods, ecosystems, and the planet’s future. To make sense of this complexity, 25 authors co-created five radical visions for the future of Food Systems in this Policy Brief. The basis of their chapters was a workshop that was implemented in March 2025 on the same topic as this Policy Brief. The event and subsequent publication of results are part of foraus’ Global Labs series, which aims to connect students from Geneva and beyond with the International Geneva ecosystem, to foster innovative policy ideas. Through an exchange with professionals and by co-writing a policy brief, each Global Lab strives to strengthen students’ set of hard skills (e.g. policy writing), soft skills (e.g. public speaking), and personal networks, while providing key multilateral fora with youth’s inputs.

One Health for the Future: Three Pathways Against Tomorrow’s Crises
With the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the past two and a half years have highlighted more than ever the need for a holistic policy approach when tackling phenomena such as zoonotic diseases (infectious diseases jumping from animals to humans). At the same time the way humanity is interacting with its environment needs to radically change to preserve not only our own but also our ecosystem’s health. If the status quo remains, future crises seem unavoidable. The project One Health for the Future explores the phenomena of zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and food safety and security threats, 3 phenomena that One Health aims at preventing and addressing.

Gender Backlash in der Aussenpolitik: un contre-mouvement
Die Schweizer Aussenpolitik befindet sich angesichts geopolitischer Fragmentierung, Budgetkürzungen, Militarisierung, technologischer Umbrüche und der Klimakrise in einem tiefgreifenden Wandel. Gleichzeitig geraten Fortschritte in der Gleichstellung der Geschlechter zunehmend unter Druck. Die Autor:innen unserer neusten Publikation vertreten die Auffassung, dass dieser «Backlash» nicht als Randphänomen verstanden werden kann, sondern eine strukturelle Entwicklung darstellt.
